Cygnet Health Care opens Pindar House to provide specialist neuropsychiatric treatment in Yorkshire and the Humber

Cygnet Health Care have opened a new unit providing neuropsychiatric rehabilitation service for men with neurological conditions and acquired brain injuries in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The new 22 bedded facility will provide a much-needed service not currently catered for in Yorkshire and the Humber, helping to reduce out of area placements and support people returning to community living.

Cygnet Pindar House will provide a safe, comfortable space to aid the recovery of patients affected by acquired brain injuries, as well as providing longer term care to help and manage progressive neurological conditions, such as Huntington’s disease.

Offering highly specialised care and treatment for men over 18 years old, the service will also cater for patients with complex physical needs, such as mobility impairments.

The modern, purpose-built facility has been designed to provide clinically-led, evidence-based neuropsychiatric care for service users. With the aim of encouraging individuals to become as independent as they can, the unit represents a significant step forward in increasing national provision in this highly specialist area of care.

Under the leadership of manager, Jackie Ewington, the hospital will offer a bespoke, person-centred approach to each service user, helping them to move forward. Goals will be focused on supporting people to return to community living – either with support or independently.

Jackie Ewington said: “We have a carefully designed rehabilitation model which is formulated to maximise the potential and ability of each service user. We will put patients at the heart of their treatment and offer a wide range of activities and therapies to promote independence. We’ll be doing lots of activities and our outside space will be used to the maximum to get the men out and about moving, active and engaged.”

Putting patient’s needs first, the building has been designed to provide a rich and engaging therapeutic environment and includes multiple therapy spaces, communal and quiet lounges and is accessible for all residents.

Working in partnership with NHS and local authority commissioners, as well as the third sector and other key partners, Cygnet Pindar House will create opportunities to work together, share learning and constantly strive to improve the provision of specialist health care across Yorkshire and the Humber.
