We were delighted to welcome our members to the INPA bi-annual, in-person meeting held at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors in Holborn, London.

Thank you to everyone who attended, it was a really useful day with lots of discussion and some thought-provoking presentations as well as chance to catch up, meet some of our new members and chat to our leadership team.

A big thank you to our speakers for giving us plenty to think about.

Dr Andy Mantell, Social Worker, Department of Mental Health and Learning Disability, School of Health and Social Care, London South Bank University

Dr Richard Irwin, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

Kirsty Stuart, Senior Associate Solicitor, Irwin Mitchell Solicitors

Dr Keith Jenkins, Clinical Neuropsychologist, St Andrews Healthcare

Dr John Burn, British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine

Dr Andy Mantell, Dr Richard Irwin, Kirsty Stuart and Dr Keith Jenkins talked us through the Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act and the practical application of this legislation in relation to looking after people with neurological conditions. This is a very complex area for those providing care for people with acquired brain injuries and the discussions were broad and varied.

Dr John Burn, Consultant Rehabilitation & Brain Injury, University Hospitals, Dorset

for The British Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine, discussed the revisions which are being made to the BSPRM guidance on Rehabilitation & Expert Complex Care in Specialist Nursing Homes and Other Residential Units. Those present provided detailed feedback to some of the more complex areas of best practice, much of which had not been considered by the authors. John invited everyone to give further input after the meeting.

We were also pleased to hear from Evie Mason who provided us with an update on the research she is carrying out on using Music Therapy to support carers of those with Huntington’s Disease.

At HQ, we have been working on improving our website and social media presence in collaboration with the team at Wish.  Sara and Georgina joined us in London to show members the new visual content and discuss the attributes and benefits of social media.

By creating a stronger identity for INPA we are able to add value for our members, providing an additional channel for news, recruitment, events and support individual practice success as well as continuing to be a voice for neurorehabilitation provision across the country.

The next INPA Members meeting will take place on 10th September on Zoom.  Further details will be circulated soon.
